Thomas C. Rowland, III
Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer, & Co-founder
Mr. Rowland is a co-founding member of the firm and its Chief Executive Officer.
Previously, he founded Palmetto Land Investment Company (“PLIC”) to identify, originate,
facilitate funding, and manage land investments arising from the publicly-held, forest
product company land divestitures taking place during that time. During this time, Mr.
Rowland was also a co-founder and CEO of Loamy, LLC the largest concrete sand and gravel
mining and processing operation in SC which was acquired by Martin Marietta Materials,
Inc. Prior to PLIC, he was a partner and President of Claybourn Walters Company ("CWC"),
a major privately-held land management and forest products brokerage / harvesting firm in
North Carolina which provided services to a clients such as Georgia-Pacific,
International Paper, Weyerhaeuser, Milliken, Plum Creek, Wachovia Timberlands, and other
major forest product businesses. Prior to CWC, he was a Procurement Forester for
Georgia-Pacific Corporation with direct responsibility for the management of G-P’s
70,000 acre Whiteville Forest located in Southeastern NC as well as 68,000 acres of G-P
Forest MAP land located in NC and SC. Mr. Rowland holds “Broker in Charge” and Forestry
licenses in both SC and NC and is a Society of American Foresters Certified Forester.
Mr. Rowland holds both B.S. and M.Fr. degrees in Forest Resource Management from Clemson
University. Mr. Rowland maintains strong ties with Clemson, and has served on the Board
of Visitors of Clemson University, and also on the Board of Visitors of the Medical
University of South Carolina. He has served on the board of directors of the North
Carolina Forestry Association.
Dan H. Stuckey
Managing Director, Chief Operations Officer, & Co-founder
Mr. Stuckey is a co-founding member of the firm and its Chief Operations Officer.
In 2004, Mr. Stuckey founded Forest Services, LLC, a forestry consulting firm whose
clients included IP-Sustainable Forest Technology, Plum Creek Timber Company,
Resource Management Services, MeadWestvaco, Coastal Timberlands Company, and
Weyerhaeuser. Prior to Forest Services, LLC, he was with International Paper
Company. Mr. Stuckey began his career at Federal Paper Board which was
acquired by International Paper Company. During his tenure at International
Paper Company, he was responsible for oversight of the company’s forest inventory
and geographic information system data associated with 2.7 million acres of forest
land from Virginia to Florida, responsible for harvest schedule and timber valuation
modeling which proved instrumental in the sale of all timber transactions and the
divesture of 500,000 acres of IP timberland in the Mid-Atlantic Region, and finally
responsible for purchasing all wood based raw materials with an annual budget of $75
million as Wood Procurement Manager for International Paper Company’s Georgetown, SC
paper mill. Mr. Stuckey is a second generation Forester and has his real
estate sales license in SC, his Forestry license in NC and SC, and is a Society of
American Foresters Certified Forester. He holds a BS degree in Forest Resource
Management from Clemson University.
P. Douglas McMillan
Managing Director, Chief Financial Officer, & Co-founder
Mr. McMillan is a co-founding member of the firm and its Chief Financial Officer.
Previously, he was a founder and manager of The McMillan Firm that provided
financial and business management advisory services to early stage emerging
companies. Prior to founding The McMillan Firm, Mr. McMillan was a Managing
Director for The Tuscarora Corporation, a middle-market private equity firm
investing in manufacturing, distribution, and retail sales companies in the U.S.
While with the Tuscarora Corporation, Mr. McMillan assumed executive management
responsibilities for several companies including Ellett Brothers, one of the largest
distributors of outdoors sports products in the U.S. Prior to joining The
Tuscarora Corporation, Mr. McMillan held executive level positions with Vanity Fair,
Monsanto, Hartmarx, Beatrice Foods, Arterial Health, LLC, and Allison Erwin Company.
These positions included Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and
others with responsibilities in finance, accounting, operations, and business
development. Mr. McMillan was also a co-founder of Loamy, LLC with Mr.
Rowland. Mr. McMillan holds a B.S. degree in Accounting from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
L. Harris Chewning CFA
Managing Director, Director of Capital Markets
Mr. Chewning is the Director of Capital Markets. Previously he founded Simpatico,
LLC, a private equity analysis, due diligence, and investment underwriting firm for
small private equity funds, endowments, and high net worth clients. Prior to
founding Simpatico, he was an investment officer with the State of South Carolina
Retirement Systems Investment Commission ("SCRSIC") responsible for portfolio
management, reporting, due diligence, and investment underwriting of fund and
co-investments for the SCRSIC’s $5 billion private equity, private debt, and real
estate portfolio. Prior to the SCRSIC, he was a project manager for the South
Carolina Department of Commerce where he was responsible for recruiting 45 company
expansions or greenfield projects, 3,787 new jobs, and over $440 million in new
capital investment to South Carolina. Mr. Chewning is a CFA Charterholder. He holds
a B.A. in Finance from Wofford College.
Laura C. Mattocks, CPA
Vice President, Controller
Ms. Mattocks is the Controller of the firm. Previously she was the Controller at a
training and consulting firm where she was responsible for all of the Finance and
Accounting for the company as well as the Human Resources. Prior to Cornelius &
Associates, Inc., she was an accountant in the audit department for Deloitte &
Touche. Ms. Mattocks is a Certified Public Accountant. She holds a B.S. degree in
Financial Management from Clemson University as well as an MBA from the University
of South Carolina.

William L. Rogers
Mr. Rogers is the founder of TexWest, LLC (www.texwestllc.com), his principal investment
vehicle. He has been a part of the beginning or cofounding of a number of world class
investment entities, including:
- the Robert M. Bass Group in Fort Worth, Texas;
- Colony Capital - which has invested over $ 60 billion in realty related assets since 1991;
- The Halifax Group - which has invested over $ 3 billion since 1999; and
- International Farming Corporation - which since 2011 has raised three limited partnerships
totaling over $ 1 billion in equity for investments in ag-related assets.
Mr. Rogers formerly served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Waddell &
Reed, Inc., one of the oldest mutual fund companies in the United States. He was a part of
the firm’s growth in distribution channels and asset size from an initial $ 30 billion in
assets under management to $ 80 billion.
A graduate of both the University of North Carolina and the University of Chicago Booth
School of Business, Mr. Rogers spent two years in President Carter’s White House, and
currently serves on the UNC Kenan Flagler Business School Board and on Duke University’s
Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions. An avid outdoorsman, his interests
include also shooting, golf, and contemporary art.
James D. Lumsden
Mr. Lumsden joined the board in 2015. Mr. Lumsden began his financial career in 1981 as an
investment banker with Kidder, Peabody and Merrill Lynch Capital Markets in New York. In 1986,
after returning to North Carolina, he gained operating experience as President of Loadmaster
Corporation and Lawyers Title of North Carolina. In 1992, he founded and served as Managing
Partner of Franklin Street/Fairview Capital, a venture capital management company which
sponsored and managed private equity investment pools. In addition, he was a founding general
partner of The Halifax Group and Oberlin Capital (a federally licensed SBIC). From 2005 to
2012, he served as Executive Chairman of Cobrek Pharmaceuticals, a specialty pharmaceuticals
firm in Chicago acquired in 2012 by Perrigo Company. Mr. Lumsden has served on the boards of
a number of private and public corporate boards, including First Federal of Raleigh, Gregory
Poole Equipment Company, Cherokee Sanford Group, and Eastern Standard Insurance Company. He
has participated actively in professional and civic organizations, including Young Presidents
Organization, the Raleigh Arts Commission (Chairman), the N.C. Museum of Art Foundation
(Chairman), and the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences Foundation, and he was also a Trustee of
St. Mary's College. Mr. Lumsden earned his B.A. in History and M.B.A. at the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975 and 1981, respectively.
Thomas J. Barrack, Jr.
Mr. Barrack joined the board in 2016. Mr. Barrack is the Founder and Executive Chairman of Colony Capital www.colonyinc.com, a leading global real estate and investment management firm with 14 offices in ten countries. Prior to founding Colony Capital in 1991, Mr. Barrack was a Principal with the Robert M. Bass Group. Mr. Barrack is co-chairman of the board of trustees of Colony Starwood Homes (NYSE: SFR), a leading single-family rental real estate investment trust. From August 1994 to September 2007, Mr. Barrack served on the board of Continental Airlines, Inc.. Mr. Barrack received a B.A. in 1969 from the University of Southern California. He attended law school at the University of San Diego and the University of Southern California, where he was an editor of the law review, and received a J.D. in 1972 from the University of San Diego. Mr. Barrack served in the Reagan administration as Deputy Undersecretary of the Department of the Interior. Additionally, in 2010 French president Nicolas Sarkozy awarded him France's Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. Mr. Barrack is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Jurisprudence degree from Pepperdine University and a Trustee at the University of Southern California.
Mr. Beck joined the board in 2016. Mr. Beck is an advisory partner of Oaktree Capital Management following his retirement in October 2015. Prior thereto, he was co-portfolio manager of a number of the funds under the supervision of the Oaktree Global Principal Group. Prior to joining Oaktree in 2000, Mr. Beck managed Seneca Capital Partners LLC, a private equity investment firm he co-founded in 1996. From 1994 to 1996, Mr. Beck was President of Archon Capital Partners L.P., an investment firm. From 1989 to 1994, Mr. Beck was President and a managing director of Rosecliff, Inc., an investment management firm. Mr. Beck was previously an officer in investment banking at Morgan Stanley, Inc. and an attorney at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Mr. Beck graduated with a B.A. degree in economics from Stanford University. He then went on to receive a J.D. from Stanford Law School and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He has served as a member of the board of directors of numerous companies in a broad range of industries.
Harold C. Stowe
Mr. Stowe joined the board in 2007. Mr. Stowe was president and chief executive officer of Canal Industries Inc., the largest independent timber broker in the Southeastern U.S. He also served as executive vice president of the Springs Company and managed the family office of the firm’s owners. Mr. Stowe currently serves on the board of directors of SCANA Corp., ArborOne Farm Credit, and Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Inc. Active in civic affairs, he has served as interim dean of Coastal Carolina University's E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, as chairman of the board of trustees of Conway Hospital, as chairman of the Myrtle Beach Air Base Redevelopment Authority, and as a member of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education Business Advisory Board. Mr. Stowe earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Washington and Lee University in 1968 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1970. Mr. Stowe received the honorary degree Doctor of Public Service from Coastal Carolina University during the December 2008 commencement ceremony. He was named an honorary founder of Coastal Carolina University in 2013.
